Starting Your Chainsaw: Petrol and Battery Models

Understanding Your Chainsaw

Knowing your chainsaw is crucial for ensuring safe and efficient operation. By understanding its specific design and intended usage, you can tailor your technique effectively.

Familiar components such as the chain brake, fuel system, and starter mechanism are essential parts to comprehend. Developing an understanding of these basic components will assist you in routine maintenance.

When comparing petrol and battery powered chainsaws, recognising the differences is vital. Petrol models typically require priming, choke adjustments and manual starting, while battery powered versions offer a simpler start.

Safety Precautions Before Starting Your Chainsaw

Before starting any chainsaw, wearing essential safety gear is imperative. Protective clothing, including chainsaw trousers, gloves, eye protection, and ear defenders, should always be utilised. Appropriate footwear and a hard hat are also recommended to prevent injuries. Safety gear minimises the risk of harm during operation significantly.

Safe handling techniques are as important as protective gear in preventing accidents. Always be mindful of your surroundings and ensure that the work area is clear of obstacles. Maintaining a firm grip on the chainsaw and a stable stance contributes to control and balance. Avoiding sudden or erratic movements when operating the chainsaw is advisable.

Starting Procedures for PETROL Chainsaws

Starting a petrol chainsaw correctly ensures a smooth and safe operation. Avoid common mistakes such as over-priming, which can flood the engine, and ensure that the chainsaw is on a stable surface before starting. Please refer to your user manual, as some chainsaws may have slightly different procedures.

Follow these steps to prime, start, and operate your chainsaw efficiently: (Some models may vary)

  • Ensure the chain brake is engaged to prevent accidental movement.
  • Prime the engine by pressing the fuel pump bulb several times until you see fuel in the bulb. (Some saws do not have a primer bulb)
  • Set the choke lever to the FULL position for a cold start.
  • Hold the chainsaw firmly on the ground with one hand, and pull the starter cord with your other hand with a swift motion until you hear the engine fire (attempt to start), then set the choke to the half position. NOTE that the chainsaw won't fully start here, but you need to hear it fire to know it is primed and ready. If you keep pulling after firing on full-choke, you may flood the machine which will then prevent it starting.
  • Drop the choke lever to HALF position, and pull again.
  • Continue pulling the starter cord until the engine runs, and blip the trigger quickly to bring it onto tickover speed.
  • You are then safe to pick up the chainsaw, and take off the chain brake ready for use.

Starting Procedures for BATTERY-POWERED Chainsaws

Battery-powered chainsaws offer an easier and user-friendly starting process. Here's how to start a battery-powered model:

  • Ensure the battery is fully charged and properly inserted into the chainsaw.
  • Engage the chain brake before attempting to start the tool.
  • Press the activation button and then squeeze the trigger to start the chainsaw. Some battery chainsaws will not allow the saw to run with the chain brake on, so this can be de-activated when you are ready to start.

The key advantage of battery-powered chainsaws is their ease of use and low maintenance requirements. They produce no direct emissions and operate quietly, making them ideal for residential areas. To ensure optimal performance, always follow recommended charging practices and store batteries in a cool, dry place.

Choosing the Right Chainsaw for Your Needs

Selecting the appropriate chainsaw begins with clearly understanding your intended purpose. Different models offer varying power levels and capabilities tailored for both domestic and professional use. The chainsaw's size and weight should be considered to match your physical comfort and operational requirements.

Some chainsaws offer extra features such as enhanced safety mechanisms and advanced starting systems. Evaluating the brand reputation and service support available is also important when purchasing your chainsaw.
